  1. 1. Aerobic glycolysis utilizes oxygen, resulting in the production of around 32 ATP molecules per glycogen molecule. This process is considered normal and healthy for energy production.
  2. 2. Anaerobic glycolysis occurs when cells lack sufficient oxygen. It is a less efficient process, yielding only two ATP molecules per glycogen molecule. Anaerobic glycolysis generates lactic acid waste and a higher quantity of harmful free radicals.

The oxygen supply to cells is crucial for athletic performance as it dictates the rate of fatigue and the duration of exertion. Heavy breathing during exercise reflects the body's effort to deliver oxygen where it is needed. Cardiovascular exercise plays a significant role in facilitating oxygen transportation.

Fatigue and soreness act as signals to prevent injury and damage. Pushing too hard leads to exercise-induced oxidative stress, which floods the system with harmful free radicals produced during anaerobic glycolysis.
